When working on an MDU Site Survey, Colobbo lets you build a full job hierarchy by linking child work orders โ€” such as Floors and Units โ€” directly to a parent work order. This keeps all related work structured, trackable, and completable in the right order.

Understanding the Work Order Header

Work order number and type โ€” The header displays the work order code and its type (e.g. MDU Site Survey V2.0). This tells you what kind of parent work order you're working from and which child types are available to add.

Skills status โ€” The Skills badge shows which certifications are required for this job type. Green means the assigned technician's skills are current and active. Red means one or more skills have expired โ€” this should be resolved before the work order progresses.

Assigned technician and company โ€” The header shows who the work order is assigned to and when it was assigned. For internal technicians, the company field will display as N/A.

Due date and status โ€” The due date and current work order status (e.g. New, In Progress, Complete) are both visible in the header for quick reference.

Viewing the Linked WO Tab

Navigate to the Linked WO tab โ€” Open the parent work order and click the Linked WO tab along the top tab bar. This shows all child work orders attached to this parent. When no children have been added yet, the table will display "There is no data available to display at the moment."

Adding Child Work Orders to a Parent

Click the + icon โ€” From any tab within the parent work order, click the + icon in the top right corner of the screen.

Select Add Linked WO โ€” A dropdown menu will appear with options including Add Linked WO, Action, and Inspection. Select Add Linked WO.

Choose the Work Order Type โ€” A modal will open titled "Add Child / Linked WO". Use the Work Order Type dropdown to select the type of child work order you want to create. The available types are pre-configured based on the parent work order type. For an MDU Site Survey parent, you can add MDU Floor or MDU Unit child work orders.

Set the number of child work orders โ€” Enter how many child work orders you want to create. For example, if a site has 2 floors, enter 2.

Enter reference names โ€” A reference name field will appear for each child work order. Enter a meaningful name that reflects the physical location โ€” for example, "Floor 1" and "Floor 2". These names appear in the Linked WO table and help everyone identify each child at a glance.

Click Save โ€” Click Save to create and link the child work orders to the parent. A confirmation toast message will appear: Child Work Order created successfully.

Building the Full Hierarchy (Floor โ†’ Unit)

Open a Floor child work order โ€” From the parent's Linked WO tab, click into a Floor work order (e.g. Floor 1). You are now inside a child work order that also supports its own linked children.

Add Unit work orders under the Floor โ€” Click the + icon, select Add Linked WO, and choose MDU Unit from the Work Order Type dropdown. Note: under a Floor work order, only MDU Unit type work orders are available to add.

Enter the number of units and their reference names โ€” Enter the quantity of units on that floor and give each a reference name (e.g. Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3). Click Save.

Repeat for each Floor โ€” Go back to the parent's Linked WO tab, open the next Floor work order, and repeat the process to add its units.

Viewing the Full Hierarchy

Expand the hierarchy from the parent โ€” On the parent MDU Site Survey, go to the Linked WO tab. Click the arrow next to any Floor work order to expand it and reveal the Unit work orders nested underneath. You can expand all floors to browse the full structure in one view.

Completing Work Orders in the Right Order

Each child has its own checklist โ€” Every Floor and Unit work order has its own checklist that must be filled out individually. You can complete checklists in any order across parent and child work orders โ€” Colobbo saves all data as you go.

Child work orders must be completed first โ€” Before you can mark the parent MDU Site Survey as Complete, all linked child work orders (Floors and Units) must have their status set to Complete. The parent work order completion is blocked until all children are done.

Return to the Work Orders grid โ€” Once finished, click the back button to return to the main Work Orders grid and continue with other jobs.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Use clear, consistent reference names that match the physical site layout โ€” such as "Floor 1 / Unit 101" โ€” so technicians and admins can instantly identify each work order without opening it.
